REUTERS/Michelle McLoughlin/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 4 (Reuters) - A divided federal appeals court on Friday rejected a challenge to a Connecticut law that ended the state's decades-old religious exemptions from immunization requirements for children in schools, colleges and day care. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said ending religious exemptions, while still allowing medical exemptions, was a rational means to promote health and safety by reducing the potential spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. He said many U.S. courts have reviewed vaccination mandates for children that lack religious exemptions, and only one, in Mississippi, has ever found constitutional problems. Five other U.S. states--California, Maine, Mississippi, New York and West Virginia--also lack religious exemptions. Connecticut's law, signed by Governor Ned Lamont, does not apply to children from kindergarten to 12th grade who previously had received religious exemptions.

The Connecticut electorate will not be voting to “unseal” ballots during November’s midterm elections, or to loosen election security measures. It has nothing to do with ballots and only to do with election results. “To be clear, ballots aren’t affected at all here; this has nothing to do with the ballots. The electorate in Connecticut will vote on whether to permit early in-person voting in the state. If passed, the initiative would also remove an antiquated requirement that election results be sealed with wax, but it would not affect any election security measures pertaining to ballots as claimed online.

BRISTOL, Conn. — A Connecticut police officer who was wounded in an apparent ambush that killed two of his fellow officers fired the shot that killed the attacker, police said. Nathan Brutcher hasn’t been accused of playing any role in the attack. Nicholas Brutcher was a divorced father of two and a gun, hunting and fishing enthusiast, according to his social media pages. In a photo posted on both brothers’ Facebook pages in 2016, Nicholas Brutcher is pointing a handgun at the camera while others, including Nathan Brutcher, are holding rifles. Other photos show Nicholas Brutcher with a 10-point deer he shot and with fish he caught.
